Curriculum & Instruction Department Information

C&I ChairWelcome Message:

I want to welcome you to the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. On behalf of the faculty and staff, we feel that our work is important and should focus on the need to provide the best education to all who seek degrees and certificates.  Today we are faced with a need to provide education that is far reaching and impacts the quality of life for our local, regional, and global community.

I’m proud to chair a department whose pledge is to increase the quality of living for those who study at the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College.  The faculty and staff of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction commit themselves to provide high quality teacher preparation and professional educator programs.  Whether you are seeking an associates, bachelor’s or masters program, the commitment is the same—excellence in teaching.

The goals of the department mirror and support those of the School of Education and the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College.  Excellence is seen in the lessons, classes and programs.  The greatest evidence of quality is that excellence can also be observed in the quality of professional educators who leave fully certified and ready to face the challenges of a changing educational community.  We have prided ourselves in maintaining a high quality program that has produced remarkable teachers and teacher leaders.  Everyone of our professional educators has many years of teaching experience and our search for new faculty has set a new standard.

We are excited about new programs that will be coming to the university.  Many challenges still need to be met, but the work is being done to improve our current undergraduate and graduate programs.  Our hope is eventually to bring the first doctorate to UTB/TSC.  The process to provide a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction is within months of completion.  No doubt, this will bring new challenges and opportunities, but as we work toward this goal, we will continue to view our work at all levels.

Enjoy your visit to our department and know that the work we do is for you and the children in our classrooms.
